Some Friends of Mine
Some Friends Of Mine hails from the San Francisco Bay Area, and was formed on a lark (not literally -- we love birds!) out of active singers from the Voices In Harmony chorus (...who Jamie could convince to let him try singing Lead...). They had such a good time singing together, though, that they decided to take the quartet seriously...well, a little seriously.
Recently, Some Friends Of Mine was (were? ...gosh this name makes it hard to conjugate verbs!...) very proud to sing on VIH’s Holiday Shows in 2015 and 2016 as well as VIH’s Beatles-themed show “Lies In The Attic.” The quartet is particularly excited that we have a featured recording of our rendition of the song “Because” on the “Lies In The Attic” album, which you can purchase on iTunes! (Search for “Lies In The Attic Because”, or visit this link: http://tinyurl.com/sfom-because ) In 2016 Some Friends of Mine was a Far Western District Top 10 Finalist.
The members of the quartet are...
...Bass, David Haedtler, has been singing barbershop harmony for over 150 years (approximately). He is married and a father of four and has had the joy of singing in a quartet with his two sons. David is a business consultant, and enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors of Voices In Harmony as Perpetual Immediate Past President.
Some friends of his know him as “the father of a Gold Medalist,” but he prefers to think of the Gold Medalist as being his son.
...Not a bass, Albee Mabeza, is a music teacher in the San Jose area, and is the current VP of Music and Performance for Voices In Harmony. His first barbershop experience started in Southern California where he sang with his college quartet, Almost Midnight.
Some friends of his dont realize that he doesnt actually know any of the music; he’s just been lucky this whole time.
...Also not a bass, David Poll, has worked for basically every company in the tech industry. Unsurprisingly he’s the guy who wrote a cappella apps Pitch Perfect and Tag Master (download them today! #shamelessplug). More importantly, he previously sang with the quartet First Strike, so you may remember him from shows from years past!
Some friends of his would like him to stop punning.
...Definitely not a bass (no matter what he says), Jamie Bedford, has been singing barbershop for about 15 years. He found out about the style when his mother got lost and stopped in at a McDonald’s for directions and saw a flyer for a show. The show featured both The New Tradition quartet and Gas House Gang, so needless to say he was immediately hooked!
Some friends of his think he’s a pretty good tenor, but he secretly wishes he could sing bass. Sigh.
