The Hans Schmidt Band
The Hans Schmidt Band has been delighting Lowcountry audiences with authentic German polkas and waltzes for over two decades. What started as a humble "Hungry Five" ensemble—featuring a trumpet, trombone, tuba or bass sax, and two clarinets—has blossomed into a vibrant group of talented musicians. Over the years, the band has expanded to include drummers, a saxophone section, and a variety of brass players, each wielding an eclectic collection of horns in all shapes and sizes. Occasionally, an accordionist joins in, adding a classic touch to their sound.
On special occasions when all of these talented musicians come together, they perform as the Hans Schmidt Orchestra, creating a rich, full sound that resonates with the spirit of German music. However, for traditional Oktoberfest celebrations, they typically keep it simple, adding just an extra trumpet or drums to their original "Hungry Five" ensemble, capturing the lively and festive energy that makes these events so memorable. Whether performing as a band or an orchestra, the Hans Schmidt Band brings an authentic, engaging experience that keeps audiences coming back year after year.
